Second seed Dominic Thiem and fifth seed Alexander Zverev have, in recent years, become accustomed to facing each other in major events on the Tour.

`You start playing tennis when you’re young, then what you always want to do is play in big tournaments and big finals. I feel this is why I got into tennis,` Zverev said on ATP

Thiem leads Zverev 7-2 in head-to-head records, including the last three wins.

Thiem (right) defeated Zverev in the semi-finals of this year’s Australian Open.

That is the level that Thiem lost a few weeks ago, when he was eliminated on the opening day at the Western & Southern Open.

Unlike the previous three Grand Slam finals with Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic, Thiem will enter as the `upper` against Zverev.

`I will not change my mind,` Thiem said.

Thiem leads the tournament in terms of winning catch games (39%) and will look to put pressure on the serve of Zverev, who is prone to double faults.

Thiem won 32 out of 82 ball-receiving games since the beginning of the tournament.

Zverev has struggled with pressure at Grand Slam tournaments, but has escaped that this year.

The German showed mental toughness, after a slow start in the quarter-finals and semi-finals.

Although the comebacks in the quarterfinals and semi-finals were admirable, Zverev cannot start slow against Thiem if he wants to win.

Zverev spent more effort than Thiem before the final.

But perhaps the deciding factor will be who takes advantage of the opportunity better.

Both Thiem and Zverev understand that this is a better opportunity to win the first Grand Slam, in the context that great players like Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will return strongly in the next major tournaments.
