China has committed to providing at least 463 million doses of its self-produced Covid-19 vaccine to countries around the world, from Asia, Europe to Latin America through exports and aid.

Two senior Indian government officials said the Quad group, including the US, Japan, Australia and India, is stepping up efforts to expand global vaccination to counter China’s `soft` power.

When asked about the above information, a spokesperson for the US State Department said Washington focuses on expanding vaccination, global vaccine production and distribution, but did not mention India’s investment proposal.

`US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken spoke with his Quad counterparts on February 18 to discuss cooperation in responding to and recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as climate change and other issues.

An Australian government source said that global recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic is a policy priority for Australia and the Quad countries.

One of two sources from India, an official with direct knowledge of the Quad’s talks, said the group has had many meetings on global vaccination.

`India has more vaccine options than any other Asian country up to this point. India expects Quad members to pour money to boost vaccine production,` the source said.

Indian pharmaceutical companies such as the Serum Institute of India, Bharat Biotech, Biological E and Cadila Healthcare have a total capacity to produce 1 billion doses of their own vaccines or in partnership with others.

Indian vaccine manufacturers are also planning to produce more Covid-19 vaccines developed by the US and Russia.

A second Indian government source said that at an online meeting in February, the Quad countries discussed how to `encourage alternative medical supply chains, thereby reducing dependence on China`.

For its part, China says concerns about Beijing using vaccines to influence other countries are just `narrow-minded.`
