The mystery of the 1,000 horsepower engine in F1 2

Renault claims that their engine is the strongest in the speed racing industry, but not as efficient as Mercedes or Ferrari.

On July 31, Renault announced that their power unit reached 1,000 horsepower.

The 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine (six cylinders arranged in a V-shape) is used in current F1 cars, producing about 840 horsepower.

The engine is said to be 1,000 horsepower from Renault.

Unlike Renault, the two leading F1 engine manufacturers – Ferrari and Mercedes – are cautious when talking about the 1,000 horsepower mark.

There are three parameters that represent the power of a vehicle, which are torque (unit N.m or joule), engine rpm (rpm) and power (hp or kW).

Torque is the force that rotates an object around an axis, such as the force to open a door, turn a screw or turn a wheel.

F1 car gearbox consists of eight gears.

Simulate the impact between the V6 engine and the gearbox.

That’s why when the car is standing still, the racer needs to downshift to a small gear to create greater force to roll the wheel.

Greater torque helps the vehicle change speed in a shorter time.

To increase the capacity of the internal combustion engine, manufacturers can improve the fuel flow rate into the combustion chamber.

Since torque or rpm are both limited, motor manufacturers can improve the efficiency of electric motors.

Improving F1 engine capacity is still a difficult problem for racing teams.

With strict limits from F1, many racing teams do not want to mention the 1,000 horsepower milestone.

The simplest option to improve engine power is to use a resistance reduction system (DRS).

The solution to the problem of improving capacity is still a mystery.

Engine reliability is also a practical factor, the difference between Mercedes and Ferrari this season.

In June 2019, Red Bull introduced the new `Spec 3` engine from Honda, with claims of improving power by 20 hp.
