In the first leg, Atletico won 3-1 at home against Real.

The 1-1 result also prevented Real from taking advantage of Girona being held to a scoreless draw by Sociedad in the early match to widen the gap.

Real lost strength before kick-off, when Vinicus was injured in the warm-up and was replaced by Brahim Diaz.

The home team got into the game better and took the lead in the 20th minute. From Lucas Vazquez’s cross on the right wing, the Atletico player cleared the ball right within Diaz’s reach.

In the 70th minute, it was Diaz’s turn to miss the opportunity to score a double.
