Ho Chi Minh City 58 students will receive technology and control methods in 19 months. The best ones will go to Japan to study, in order to operate Metro Train No. 1 at the end of 2021.

In early April, I learned that the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board (MAUR) was recruiting a technician to drive Metro train No. 1 (Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien), Ms. Pham Thi Thu Thao, 33 years old, in District 2, City.

Pham Thi Thu Thao, the only female student, during a lesson on Urban Railway Overview at Railway College, July 22.

Previously, Thao worked as a preschool teacher for 11 years, but the dream of working on metro trains always motivated the young teacher.

`When I heard that I wanted to become a metro train driver – a profession usually reserved for men, both my husband and family were surprised at first, but then they all supported me,` Thao said, noting that it was due to her all-day class schedule from Monday.

Like Thao, Hoang Nguyen Nhat Minh, 24 years old, is studying mechanical engineering at the end of this year but has enrolled in the metro train driving class to find new opportunities.

58 students (ages 21 to 35) of the first metro driving course organized by Urban Railway Company No. 1 are being trained at the Grassroots Railway College in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City.

Mr. Nguyen Manh Cuong, Director of the Center for Research and Transfer of Science and Technology at Railway College, said that according to the plan, the first 15 months students will learn the basics, and the last four months will be trained by Japanese experts in subjects.

`This is a new field, but before that, the school has coordinated with many parties to organize specialized teachers to participate in metro operation training courses in Korea, Japan, China…`, Mr. Cuong said and said.

58 students are studying theory at the Junior Railway College in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City.

After being put into operation, each metro train will have 4 departments directly involved in the operation: train dispatcher, driver, train service team at the station and safety support department.

For trains, the driver can only operate the train corresponding to the vehicle license (license to drive diesel locomotives, electric locomotives, steam locomotives, specialized railway vehicles) issued.

Therefore, students will have to accept metro technology at the end of the training course, meeting operating procedures, handling unexpected incidents and customer service skills.

After completing the course, students will take a theoretical test on many contents about technical regulations, safe operation, street light signals… Next, they must pass a specialized test on structure and principles.

In particular, during the practice test, candidates must run through at least 11 compartments (the distance between two adjacent stations) in a row, requiring correct time, speed and skills such as measuring distance, stopping the train,

According to MAUR, the training time for 58 students will be in parallel with the progress of Metro No. 1 being put into operation, expected in December 2021.

Metro Line No. 1 will have 17 trains operating, of which the initially imported trains will have 3 cars (61.5 m long), then will have 6 cars (121.5 m long).

According to the plan, the first train returning to Ho Chi Minh City will technically operate the elevated section – from Binh Thai intersection to Long Binh Depot (District 9) in the third quarter of this year.

The contractor successfully tested it in Japan and on April 1 planned to bring 2 trains to the port to ship to Vietnam but had to stop due to the Covid-19 epidemic.

Metro Line No. 1 is nearly 20 km long, including 2.6 km underground with a total investment of 43,700 billion VND.
