Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases has been transformed into a place specializing in treating Covid-19 9

On June 9, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health decided to change the function of the Hospital for Tropical Diseases into a place specializing in treating Covid-19 patients, with 400 beds.

According to Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health Tang Chi Thuong, this conversion is part of the treatment department’s proactive Covid-19 response plan in a situation where the city records 5,000 nCoV positive cases.

According to Mr. Thuong, city hospitals have currently received more than 500 Covid-19 patients, which is expected to increase in the near future.

The hospital plans to temporarily transfer inpatients with other infectious diseases, except tetanus patients, to city general and specialized hospitals with infection departments to prioritize receiving Covid-19 patients.

Talking to VnExpress, PhD, Doctor Nguyen Van Vinh Chau, Director of Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases, said that this function conversion plan was developed by the Department of Health from the early days of the epidemic.

According to Dr. Chau, since mid-May, when the epidemic situation in Ho Chi Minh City began to become complicated, the hospital has proactively limited new hospitalizations, discharged patients who were stable, and consulted to transfer patients.

A week ago, the hospital restructured the Adult Intensive Care Department to treat severe Covid cases.

Ho Chi Minh City Tropical Diseases Hospital has a total of 550 beds.

`Since the beginning of this week, the hospital has temporarily stopped admitting patients except for tetanus, severe HIV and adult dengue fever,` said Dr. Chau.

On June 9, the hospital still had 130 non-Covid-19 patients.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health today also asked Cu Chi District Hospital to prepare to change its function to Cu Chi Covid-19 Treatment Hospital, if the number of Covid-19 cases in the city continues to increase.
