Public Health England (PHE) recently recommended that medical staff caring for Covid-19 patients should use FRSM masks as respiratory protective equipment.

PHE guidance has been updated to oblige England’s NHS organizations to assess Covid-19 risk to staff and provide appropriate FFP3 masks.

Addenbrooke began testing employees for Covid-19 at the start of the pandemic, including asymptomatic employees.

Therefore, the hospital’s infection control department has upgraded the type of mask used for staff in areas treating Covid-19 patients.

The call for more effective mask use comes as experts warn that the number of nCoV infections in hospitals could continue to pose a challenge even if medical staff have been vaccinated, after a study found

Research shows that at one hospital, 30 out of 3,800 healthcare workers infected with nCoV were symptomatic, the majority infected with the Delta variant, 11 were clearly linked to a `super-spreader` event.

At the second hospital, which has 4,000 medical staff, there were 118 symptomatic cases, and at the third hospital, which had 1,100 medical staff, there were 70 symptomatic cases.

`The data we present are essentially consistent with vaccinated people then infecting others,` said Cambridge University professor Ravi Gupta, co-author of the study.

`While vaccines protect healthy people against severe disease in the community, the Delta variant increases the likelihood of severe disease in hospitals, where many vulnerable patients are present.`

The team said their findings highlight the need to maintain infection control measures in the post-vaccination era.
