Minister of Education and Training Phung Xuan Nha approved 32 grade 1 textbooks according to the new general education program, for use from the 2020-2021 school year.

At the press conference on the afternoon of January 22 in Hanoi, Mr. Thai Van Tai, Director of Primary Education, Ministry of Education and Training, said that after two rounds of evaluation, 38 out of 49 drafts of nine subjects met the requirements.

Among the 32 books, there are five Vietnamese books, five Math books, five Ethics books, three Nature and Society books, one Physical Education, five Music, five Fine Arts and three Experiential Activities books.

Vietnam Education Publishing House prevailed when 24 books, forming 4 book sets, were approved.

Explaining the lack of publicizing the electronic versions of textbook samples for the public to view, Mr. Tai said that textbooks are related to the Intellectual Property Law, and the publicity depends largely on the author.

Regarding the book selection process, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thanh, Deputy Department of Secondary Education, Ministry of Education and Training is developing a circular to guide the selection of books according to each subject and educational activity.

Regarding the roadmap, before March 2020, localities must establish councils and announce the results of textbook selection in the list announced by the Ministry.

From the 2020-2021 school year, new grade 1 textbooks will begin to be used, replacing the current set of books.

Resolution 88 of 2014 of the National Assembly on reforming general education programs and textbooks clearly states the policy of implementing the socialization of textbook compilation, with a number of textbooks for each subject.

In December 2018, the Ministry of Education and Training announced a new general education program with an overall and detailed program of 27 subjects.

Currently, students across the country use a set of textbooks from Vietnam Education Publishing House and a number of books on Primary Education Technology by Professor Ho Ngoc Dai.
